This is the flyer that goes for the summer exhebition in Etalage Derde Wal in Nijmegen.

It’s titled ‘Thank you for watching‘ and revolves around the theme of rejection, decisionmaking of artists, intimacy, critics and submission.

Joining the exhebition: Kjub Fiasko, Meldy Ijpelaar, Aaltje van der Molen, Nurzehra Ulukaya and me.

Besides the artshow there will be a space filled with statements by artists and yet other artists will be interviewed.

Having only a website is not enough to show what I am doing. Social media is the magic word and of course I have those. Here I made a little list of where elso you can follow me. And if you are not interested in everything, you can follow the things you are interested in.

• On Tumblr you can keep track of everything I find inspiring. That can be websites, others art, instagram photo’s, memories, snapshots, my own and others photo’s and of course new paintings.
• For photographs only follow my Flickr photostream. Here I post a selection of self-made analog photographs from my ever expanding archive. The place to see my paintings before they are painted.
• Twitter is my least favorite but if you are checking using it anyways, it will link you all the updates from Tumblr and sometimes I’ll even post something directly on it.

This is the first real encounter with cutting paintings while working on it.

The painting was started in 2009 but never finished. It was too big, not interesting enough, little bit boring and quite campy. So I left it undone and since then it had been standing in the back of my atelier.

-

Until I started cutting up a painting. And another, which is not yet posted because after cutting it I realized it wasn’t finished yet.

-

Than the windowwiping busdriver popped up into my mind. It made to cut up and by doing that I would eliminate all the surface that covered the boring parts of the image. The ones that I didn’t want to paint.

What was left was the subject, a bit of context -the unimportant latter I’d cut out- and a piece that allowed me to go abstract. Some work with trhead and needle was required to keep surfaces in place and I started painting.

Now, after 3 years it’s finished.

Until I decide that it isn’t.

It all started with the idea to start making collages. This came from the crazy idea t0 make things that sprung from my imagination.

-

Not that I don’t have imagination but when I’m about to make something all imagination seems to disappear. Of course I have imagination, even enough to leave others flabbergasted and myself dying laughing, but the problem is that I have not a single clue what imagination would look like in reality.

-

What I do know what it looks like in reality, is reality itself. This -color, light, composition and the rest of the jadajada- I capture with the help of a photocamera. The fact that the resulting image is produced by a physical reaction caused by light colliding with a piece of matter, is for me a satifactory reason to call the image produced ‘a registration of reality’ and because of that ‘reality’ in the shape of a picture.

Where was I?

When I initiated to make my own reality, I had not a single cleu what to make. So I started from a picture (wrong!) of an airport terminal. After a while I remembered myself that I wanted to adapt a whole new way of working and it ment that it had to become a collage.

Looking for a thing to paste into the collage I found this painting and decided to cut out the lady and re-use it somewhere else. So I started cutting. But instead of cutting out the lady, I saw that taking out the background would be much better.

-

So I did. Only added some thread to keep it straight and I found a new way of working. Yet not about how to apply it.

What kind of portraits am I looking for and can you think of sending in? A couple suggestions:

• Photobooth pictures! (classics never die)
• Pictures of you with a ridiculous face
• Photo’s from your Facebook/other social media
• Close-ups made with a flash
• You going totally crazy
• You looking like you are kissing the camera (genuine kissing, duckfaces will be burned)
• Color OR black & white
• LOMO pictures
• Partypictures (as long as they are portraits)
• Actually any not plain, neat ,boring portrait with a toothpaste advertisement smile

What to do with small pieces of leftover canvas? That’s what I was thinking before I decided to just nail the +/- A3-sized pieces to the atelier-wall and prepare them with gesso.

-

This appeared to be one of the best idea’s I had in a long time.

-

The careless way of preparing canvas doesn’t cost any time and energy, allowing me to paint nonchalant without worrying to spoil a canvas that I worked hard on to stretch and prepare.

-

Resulting in this quickly painted portrait. In this case it’s my cousin who’s picture I stole from Facebook. Of course I told her in the comments that I would make a painting of it but she didn’t take it serious. Though I wouldn’t spend a well prepared canvas on it, I really wanted to paint this. Of course for the regular light and color reasons.

I’m really enjoying this method of painting, so it sure is one to stay. All the sudden it also created a distinction between stretched canvasses on a wooden frame and practice sketches such as this one.

My week is made, always nice to make a new concrete step.

Current exhebition in de Klinker in Nijmegen. Thanks to Frans one of the best painting-compositions till now. With a very well figurative-abstract-looking-back-and-forward-portrait-situation-light-and-color balance.
